Bollywood actor Urmila Matondkar met Congress President Rahul Gandhi in Delhi and was officially announced as a member of the Congress party on Wednesday.
Urmila Matondkar is likely to contest from Mumbai in the national elections.
With the presence of Mumbai Congress leader Milind Deora and his predecessor Sanjay Nirupam, the 45-year old actor said, “I am taking my first step in active politics. I am from a family that has shaped my political views based on the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel.”
She added, “Even being from an academics-oriented family, she entered films, but had my social awareness right from childhood.”
Matondar further said, “She joined Congress because she believed in the party’s ideology. I will stay in the party even after the elections.”
She also voiced on the problem of unemployment in the country and will work for the betterment of the youth.
However, Milind Deora said on Matondkar’s induction in the Congress party, “I have known Urmila ji for years. She is not just one of India’s finest artists, but someone who is extremely opinionated on issues affecting our society.”
