The Hyderabad GST (Goods and Services Tax) Commissionarate has accounted Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu on December 27 for neglecting tax payments during 2007-08 for being the brand ambassador of certain products.
The released press note stated, “The total tax due from him was Rs. 18.5 lakhs. Today, the GST department has attached his bank accounts in Axis bank and ICICI bank for an amount of Rs. 73.5 lakhs which includes tax, interest and penalty”.
A senior member of the GST department said, “We have attached the bank accounts and started recovering. We have recovered Rs. 42 lakh from Axis bank today. ICICI bank has to pay tomorrow”.
The department asserted that the bank is responsible for the payment or else under section 74 of the Finance Act 1994, action will be initiated against the bank.
