New Delhi: The Opposition today picked former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, as its candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election. Leaders from 18 Opposition parties met at the Parliament House and unanimously picked Gopalkrishna.
In fact Goplalkrishna’s the only name that was reportedly discussed in the meeting that took place in Parliament House.
After the meeting, Congress President Sonia Gandhi told media persons that all the parties unanimously decided upon Gopalkrisna’s name for the candidature. The Congress President also intimated that several opposition leaders have already spoken to Gopalkrishna and he has given his consent for the candidature.
The JD(U), which had broken ranks with the opposition mainly due to the unilateral decision of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the presidential poll was represented by Sharad Yadav at the meeting.
Other leaders at the meeting included Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, TMC’s Derek O’ Brien, CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury, NC’s Omar Abdullah, SP’s Naresh Agarwal and BSP’s Satish Chandra Mishra.
If required, polling for the vice president’s post will take place on August 5. The votes will be counted the same evening.
The BJP-led NDA, which had taken the lead in announcing the Presidential candidate in Ram Nath Kovind, has not yet taken any decision regarding its candidate. Now it is to be seen whether it supports Gopalkrishna’s candidature or puts up its own.
