Bargarh: The daylong race the selection of the new Demon King Kansa for the famous Dhanu Jatra finally came to an end today with Bhubaneswar Pradhan grabbing the coveted role for this year.
At least 23 artists had took part in the final round of audition out of a total of 30 aspirants from which Bhubaneswar Pradhan was selected by the five-member special jury to play the prestigious character of Kansa.
The audition was held at District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) office here today.
The Additional District Collector of Bargarh announced the name of Bhubaneswar Pradhan to enact the role of ‘Kansa’ with the approval of the selection committee.
He has earlier played the role of the mythological character twice before during 1998-1999 and 1999-2000.
Kansa, the legendary demon king of Mathura, plays a vital role during the 11-day grand festival Dhanu Jatra that is based on Krishna Leela and Mathura Vijay. Dhanu Jatra is considered as world’s largest open-air theatre.
Interestingly, Kansa can punish people with a penalty for their mistakes during the festival. Often it has been witnessed Kansa not sparing the District Collector or the SP in his court.
During the festival, Bargarh becomes the city of Mathura, the river Jeera becomes the Yamuna and Ambapali situated on the other side of Jeera turns into Lord Krishna’s Gopapura.
