The dubious tag of India being home to some of the most polluting cities of the world couldn’t have escaped a study that puts Gurugram as the most polluted city in the world in the year 2018. Four more National Capital Region (NCR) cities – Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida and Bhiwadi, too, feature in the top 10 of the most polluted cities in the world.
The data released by IQ AirVisual and Greenpeace lists 22 cities of India among the first 30 cities.
Beijing which earlier recorded the most polluted city in the world is now down to 122nd in the pollution index.
The report by IQ AirVisual said, “Average concentrations in the cities in China fell by 12% from 2017 to 2018. Beijing ranks now as the 122nd most polluted city in the world, with PM2.5 levels falling more than 40% since 2013.”
PM2.5 is a pollutant that can enter into the lungs and bloodstreams of the body.
The Executive Director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia, Yeb Sano said, “This has enormous impacts, on our health and on our wallets. In addition to human lives lost, there is an estimated cost of $225 billion in lost labour and trillions in medical cost.”
Among the polluted top 30 cities, 5 cities are from China, two from Pakistan and one from Bangladesh.
