Justice Madan B Lokur Crosses Border for Oath Ceremony of Pakistan Supreme Court Chief Justice


Pakistan top judge Asif Saeed Khosa was sworn in as the Supreme Court Chief Justice of Pakistan on January 18. The list of invitees for the swearing-in ceremony included former Supreme Court Justice Madan B Lokur.

As stated by Justice Lokur earlier on January 4, that “Justice knows no boundaries” in reference to his visit to Pakistan for the Chief Justice swearing-in ceremony.

In an unprecedented move for the first time, Justice Lokur was part of the bench and heard three cases for 45 minutes on January 18 in the court of Pakistan.

One was a challenge of conviction, the other was a bail hearing and the last one was a civil matter to which the two parties compromised.

Justice Khosa took the oath ceremony presided by the Pakistan President Arif Alvi. The Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan also attended the event. Defence personnel of Pakistan and other dignitaries were also in attendance.

Pakistan’s 26th Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa oath ceremony was also attended by President Supreme Court of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Narin Ferdi Sefik, Chief Judge of the State of Borno Nigeria Kashim Zannah and former judge and founding president of Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute of Canada, Sandra E Oxner.

Justice Lokur was accompanied by his wife and he termed his reception at the neighboring country as “unprecedented”.

Justice Lokur said on the oath ceremony as, “wonderful and the court was not crowded. Like in India, it was open to press.”

Lokur described Khosa as, “a very learned, articulate and a good man.”

Justice Lokur has been friends with Justice Khosa since 2004. Lokur was then in Delhi HC and Khosa in Lahore HC.

Justice Khosa will serve as the Pakistan SC Chief Justice till December 21, 2019.
