Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today gave away the Biju Patnaik Award For Scientific Excellence for the year 2016 to world renown lung cancer chemotherapist Dr. Digambar Behera at a function in Jayadev Bhawan here.
Professor Digambar Behera at present is serving as the Head of the Department(HOD) of Medicine in the prestigious Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research(PGIMER) in Chandigarh.
After graduating from SCB Medical College and Hospital,Cuttack, in 1978, he joined the PGIMER as a Junior Resident in the Department of Medicine and has been continuing in the same institute till date.
He completed his MD in Medicine in 1980 and then the Diplomate of National Board of Examinations in medicine and respiratory medicine respectively in 1982 and 1983. respectively.
He joined the medicine department faculty of PGIMER in 1984 and was elevated to the post of Professor in 2000. He became the HOD in May 2014. Professor Digambar Behera is a member of several national and international professional bodies.
He is regarded as a pioneer of lung cancer chemotherapy in the country. He is the founder President of the Indian Study for the Study of Lung Cancer. He has to his credit published over 460 papers and has received many awards.
