The Apex Court today rejected the month old choice for the Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh, and appointed Sanjay Mishra, former judge of the Allahabad High Court for the position.
The Supreme Court in December 2015 had said that Justice Virendra Singh will be replaced as Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh.
A bench comprising of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Prafulla C. Pant at the top court appointed Justice Sanjay Mishra over Justice Virendra Singh for India’s most populas state.
After Virendra Singh was appointed for the Lokayukta strong objections were raised by judges in UP. A few days ago Supreme Court had indicated that it would pick a new Lokayukta in few days.
Justice Virendra Singh was approved by a committee that included Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition from Uttar Pradesh and the senior most judges from Uttar Pradesh, including DY Chandrachud Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
However it was later revealed that the Leader of Opposition, Swami Prasad and the Chief Justice had objected the decision made by the committee for appointing Justice Singh.
The SC intervened into the matter, only after the UP government and the committee set to appoint the Lokayukta had missed multiple deadlines for more than a year.
