Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora presiding the poll panel said there ought to be differences between the members of the poll panel on Saturday.
Such statement by Arora comes after Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa repeated absence from the poll meetings on the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) since May 4 after clean chits were given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah on poll violation row by the CEC.
In reply to Election Commissioner’s Ashok Lavasa’s letter, the Chief Election Commissioner said, “The three members of EC are not expected to be template or clones of each other, there have been so many times in the past when there has been a past diversion of views it can, and should be.”
Earlier, Ashok Lavasa had written in his 3 letters to the CEC that he would only attend meetings if dissent notes and minority orders are included in the MCC by the poll panel.
Meanwhile, CEC Sunil Arora also added, “But the same largely remained within the confines of ECI after demission of office unless appearing much later in a book written by the concerned ECs/CECs. I have personally never shield away from a public debate whenever required but there is a time for everything.”
The CEC also said, “This has severely tarnished the institutional integrity of the Election Commission.”
