The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi has been alleged of sexual misconduct by a former women employee and an urgent hearing has been presided by the Chief Justice himself along with Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna on Saturday.
Earlier, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had appeared before the SC and leveled charges against the CJI before the hearing of the court earlier on the day.
Justice Gogoi voiced such allegations against him as a ploy to trespass in the independence of judiciary.
Gogoi said, “I don’t want to stoop so low as to answer these charges.”
He added, “There are forces that are trying to destabilise the judiciary. There are bigger forces behind these allegations hurled at me.”
The Chief Justice responded the false allegations have cropped up because of his hearing on a sensitive case next week.
He said, “The woman who has made these allegations has a criminal background, there are two FIRs against her.”
The women employee was a former junior assistant at the CJI’s home and was dismissed last year after she reported a matter on sexual misconduct to the Registry.
The Chief Justice said against the false allegations on him, “What troubles me is that after 20 years of service, I have a bank balance of Rs. 6 lakh and Rs. 40 lakh in provident fund. When I was a judge I had more. No one can catch me on money. They have to look for something else.”
