The newly elected 25th RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das from Odisha has not been given a welcome start over his degree credentials. Das is a retired IAS officer and was supplemented to the post of RBI Governor on December 11 because of Urjit Patel’s self exit.
Das holds a degree in MA History which is not well received in the political quarters. Former Gujarat cabinet minister during Narendra Modi regime and BJP leader Jay Narayan Vyas tweeted, “The New RBI Governor Das’s educational qualification is MA (History). Hope and Pray he doesn’t make RBI also a History. May God Bless the New Arrival!! ”.
Das is compared to his predecessors Urjit Patel and Raghuram Rajan who held doctorates in Economics.
Speaking further, Vyas elaborated, “To manage RBI you have to have a fair knowledge of the domestic and international economy. I respect IAS, the issue is that they are exposed to a little of many things but the acceptance among the international community which earlier governors commanded (is not there)”.
He summed it up saying, “I would wish that a person heading that bank may be a qualified economist. They are trained for general management. The management of the economy especially when it’s going through a rough weather requires altogether different kinds of talent”.
Vyas said he sympathized with the new RBI Governor holding MA in History where he has to “pull out a lot more at his age that is near retirement”.
Shaktikanta Das is a Odia and a 1980 batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service of the Tamil Nadu Cadre. During his 37 year long career, he has worked mostly in economic and finance departments.
