In a midnight crackdown on a store belonging to Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhgam (AMMK) supporter, the Income Tax (IT) officials seized around 1.48 crore cash in Theni district in Tamil Nadu on the intervening night of April 17.
After getting tip-off of undisclosed cash present in a store at Andipatti, the IT department swung to action. As per IT Department’s Director General’s statement, 94 bundles of cash with ward numbers, number of voters and amount to be dispersed i.e. Rs.300 written over the packets were seized. The raid procedure had continued till 5.30 AM in the morning.
The IT sleuths had to face some resistance from the AMMK workers during the crackdown and the police had to fire in air for warning. No reports of any untoward incident happened at the site.
The police have detained around seven AMMK workers.
Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha polls in the Tamil Nadu state go to floors on April 18.
