A large gathering of students staged a protest outside the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) against the steeped hostel fees and new rules on their third convocation ceremony on Monday.
Security personnel have been deployed outside the varsity and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to stop the agitated students raising slogans and holding placards.
The police resorted to water cannons to break the protest of the students and has urged the JNU student union President to make way for the Human Resource and Development (HRD) minister Ramesh Pokhriyal to go out.
The HRD minister and vice president M Venkaiah Naidu had been invited as the chief guests for the convocation ceremony.
However, the students have demanded the JNU vice-chancellor to meet them and sort out the issue on the 300 percent hike of the hostel fees.
