IAS officer Asish Kundra has replaced SB Shashank as the Chief Electoral Officer. The decision to replace Shashank with Kundra was taken by the Election Commission of India. Shashank’s relationship soured with the former Principal Secretary L.Chuaungo over interrupting the poll process following which Chuaungo had to go.
SB Shashank drew the ire of the current Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla , who briefed Shashank’s actions in a letter to the PM Narendra Modi. He wrote, “His style of functioning & his complete failure to take his own colleagues into confidence has led to this impasse”. The Mizoram CM mentioned that Shashank’s handling of the poll process “leaves much to be desired” on Nov 5.
Shashank’s actions prompted the Mizo People’s Forum (MPF) and civil society demanding his resignation. Since Tuesday, mass protests were on demanding his removal. SB Shasank left Mizoram on Wednesday as per the verdict of the Election Commision.
