Supreme Court Rules Release of Journalist Prashant Kanojia

The Supreme Court (SC) ordered immediate release of UP-based freelance journalist Prashant Kanojia on bail who has been arrested for posting certain remarks on Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday.

Prashant Kanojia was arrested on June 8. He had posted a video content on a woman who had made ill remarks on marriage proposal against the UP CM. Kanojia was arrested from his residence and the woman in the video was also nabbed.

The Supreme Court bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Ajay Rastogi said, no one can challenge anyone’s liberty. This is guaranteed by the Constitution.

The SC bench rather ruled the UP police to initiate action against the freelance journalist but the arrest of the individual is a matter of disregard.

Earlier on June 10, wife of Kanojia had moved to the Supreme Court.

However, the UP police replied to the SC bench on Kanojia being involved in such inflammatory posts on gods and goddesses in the past.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court did not entertain such an action by UP police as correct; instead it replied, arrest cannot be done basing on some tweets.

The Editors’ Guild has condemned the arrest of Kanojia.
