US State Secretary Mike Pompeo in India; Focus on Trade and S400 Missile


The United States (US) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who landed in New Delhi on June 25 met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday to discuss on an array of issues which concerns India-Russia S400 surface-to-air missile deal, terrorism and trade among other issues.

Mike Pompeo on his 3-day visit will also meet the Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar at lunch on Wednesday.

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval will also join the external affairs minister to discuss on issues relating to terror and defence.

Russia’s S-400 missile of around 5.2 billion dollars which requires tax waiver from US sanctions is a prominent feature likely to figure in the Pompeo-Jaishankar meet.

H-1B visas, security issues in Indo-Pacific region, space and energy, e-commerce and 5G are also certain issues which are also in line for discussion.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visit comes in the wake of the G-20 summit in Osaka in Japan on June 28 where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet the United States President Donald Trump.
