Vandalisation in Kerela over Entry of Women in Sabarimala Temple; 1800 Arrested


After the entry of 2 women in Sabarimala temple on January 2, massive vandalisation has been observed in northern Kerela since. Around 1800 people have been taken into police custody.

Especially in Kannur district the RSS and the ruling CPM have escalated tension even more. From January 3, various incidents of violence have been reported.

The RSS backed outfit has attacked more than 20 offices of ruling CPM party. 31 persons have been reported injured.

On the night of January 4, a worker of CPM party was stabbed with a knife in Iritti in Kannur. Also, crude bombs were hurled by unknown groups at the CPM’s Thalassery MLA AN Shamseer around 10 PM. The CPM MLA was not present at home during this incident and a case has been registered.

Kannur and Kazhikode districts have observed rampant protests over Sabarimala row. Kerela DGP Lokanath Behra, since then has increased the security of the region after the RSS backed group Sabarimala Karma Samithi called for recent shutdown of the state which led to wider protests every continuing hour.

The DGP said, “Operation Broken Window has been activated to retain peace and harmony in the disputed state.”

On the night of January 3, another 46-year old woman of Sri Lankan origin had entered the Lord Ayyappa temple. On entering the temple, she claimed her uterus already being removed and she did not include in the menstruation age group.
