Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today stayed away from the 18-opposition parties meet held at the Parliament House in New Delhi to take a decision on the combined opposition candidate for the upcoming Vice-President election scheduled to be held on August 5.
Though Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former West Bengal governor and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi was unanimously chosen as the opposition candidate, Chief Minister and BJD Naveen Pattanaik has now kept everybody guessing about his next move on this issue.
The NDA is yet to open its card and it is not known whether it will put up its own candidate or support Gopalkrishna whom everyone consider to be a very suitable candidate for his background as well his non-controversial role as the governor of West Bengal.
Notably, Naveen was one of the first leaders who had lend his party’s support to the NDA’s President candidate Ram Nath Kovind.
Several other leaders opposed to the BJP and the NDA like had approached Naveen to join the anti-NDA alliance on the Vice-President issue. They included TMC supremo Mamata Bannerjee, CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury and the Congress even
However, Naveen decided not to attend the meeting nor did he send any representative.
What will Naveen do now? If the NDA puts up its candidate will he lend his party’s support to it? In case of an election will he support Gopalkrishna Gandhi? Even his closest aides have no clues about it. Till then he has kept everybody on ‘guess mode’.
