12 Women Among 52 Held For Cuttack Group Clash

Cuttack(PTI): A total of 52 persons, including 12 women, have so far been arrested in connection with yesterday’s group clash that broke out between residents of Sarvodayapur and Sweeper Colony near Rajabagicha here.

“All the arrested have been forwarded to court from where they have been remanded in judicial custody,” said local ACP Asim Mishra, adding the police had arrested 27 of them on Thursday itself.

He did not rule out more arrests in this connection.

The residents of both the localities were at loggerheads for over a month allegedly over subscription collections for the Durga puja held last week. They had even entered into a minor scuffle during the immersion festival last Sunday.

However, on Friday morning, all hell broke loose when both the warring factions entered into a pitched battle after a verbal duel over an alleged incident of eve teasing. Many residents, including a few policemen, were injured in the clash when they hurled stones and glass bottles at each other.

“The situation in the locality now is under control after the mischief mongers were taken into custody,” the ACP said adding, two platoons of armed police are currently deployed in the area.

Meanwhile, the city peace committee members are now holding parleys with local heads for an amicable settlement of their differences.
