Balasore: With the arrests of 17 members of an inter-state bike-lifters gang and seizure of 57 two-wheelers the district police claimed to have made the largest ever one-time recovery of stolen motor bikes in Odisha. Most of the stolen bikes were lifted from Balasore and adjoining districts.
According to reports, the history-sheeters against whom several cases were pending in different police stations were active since last one year. The gang members used to steal two-wheelers from busy market places or crowded public places. The stolen bikes were later being disposed off through middlemen and agents including some garage mechanics. The gang used to sell two-wheelers with fake numbers and registration documents.
The district police was perturbed for the last six months as over 200 cases of bike thefts were registered in different police stations in the district. The gang is suspected to be involved in most of these cases.
The police suspected that many more persons are either directly or indirectly involved with the bike-lifting gang. The police have launched a massive manhunt to nab another wing of the gang which is engaged in preparing fake registration papers and selling of bikes.
