Another Nuapada Farmer Kills Self Over Crop Loss, Loan Burden

Nuapada: In yet another tragic incident, a farmer hanged himself to death in Jenjara village under Budhipali panchayat in the district being distressed over twin burden of crop loss and repayment of loans today.

The distressed farmer has been identified as Aganu Rout.

Reportedly, Aganu Rout had grown paddy in five acres of his land this year by taking loans from local money lenders and cooperative societies. However, his crops were damaged by pest attack and unseasonal rain. Unable to pay back the loans, Aganu Rout took the extreme step by hanging himself from a tree in his farmland this morning.

Notably, at least 8 farmers have committed suicide in the district this year due to crop loss and loan burden caused by scanty rainfall and pest attack.
