Berhampur: An Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Ganjam Police sustained bullet injuries as a gun battle ensued with a dreaded history-sheeter near a roadside eatery on the National Highway-16 on the outskirts of the city today.
The history-sheeter, Keshab Kundu, also sustained bullet wounds following an encounter with police.
Acting on a tipoff, a team of police officials chased the notorious gangster and tender-fixer who opened four rounds of fire at the police team. The cops opened fire in retaliation and the gun battle lasted for about 10 minutes.
Among the cops, Dipti Ranjan Pradhan, an Assistant Sub- Inspector of Digapahandi police station was injured, police officials said.
A country-made pistol besides ammunitions were seized from the possession of the arrested criminal.
Police were in search of Kundu, who was wanted in 15 criminal cases including a case of murder. He had formed a crime syndicate and had unleashed lawlessness and terror. However he was evading arrest since long, police said.
