Cyclone Phethai Chills Odisha with Rain


The deep depression turned Cyclone ‘Phethai’ in the Bay of Bengal is due to hit Andhra Pradesh coast between Machlipatnam and Kakinada in the afternoon today. The changed weather phenomenon has brought rain in winter to Odisha.

As per the Meteorology department, Bolangir, Keonjhar, Koraput, Sambalpur, Subarnapur and Malkanagiri have received light rainfall. Capital city Bhubaneswar and Millenium city Cuttack have experienced light drizzle. The sky remains overcast and has brought the mercury lower.

The prediction of downpour to the state as per the meteorology department has made the Odisha government prepared.

The Gajapati district has already transferred 11600 people to 174 shelters. Necessary arrangements for cooked food is also available.

Collector Anupam Sahu said, “All precautionary measures have been taken in view of the upcoming cyclone. People in low lying areas have been transferred. Farmers have moved their agricultural yields to their safe houses. The control room is ready to operate round the clock”.

Red warning has been alerted to four districts – Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Gajapati. Ganjam, Puri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Bargarh, Bolangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Sundargarh have been sounded out with yellow warning.
