Facebook Suicide: Police Book Wife, Her Paramour In Santantu Patra Suicide Case


Puri: In a major development in the suicide case of Santantu Patra of Gadabhingura village in Puri district, the Puri Sadar Police lodged cases against his wife and her alleged lover Amaresh Swain today.

According to sources, the Puri Sadar police also wrote to the Whatsapp and Facebook social sites authorities to submit the chatting details and post records of the accounts held by the deceased and the accused.

Talking to reporters on the latest development in the case, Puri SP Sarthak Sarangi informed that cases under Section 306, 506, and 34 have been registered suo motu against Santanu’s wife and her alleged lover after taking into account the confessional video posted by the deceased on Facebook before his suicide.

However, the SP said that police is considering all aspects of the case in the investigation as the accused woman has also complained of torture by her deceased husband.

“We have written to Whatsapp and Facebook companies to submit chat and post records of the accounts involved in the case. Everything would come clear once we receive those and examine those details. However, it is a time consuming process,” Sarthak Sarangi added.

Earlier in the day, Puri Sadar police questioned the father, mother, father-in-law and mother-in-law of the victim in connection with the case. They also seized the mobile set of Santanu Patra which he had used to record the Facebook video post to narrate his confessal statement.

Notably, Santanu Patra had posted a Facebook video on November 9 saying his wife’s extramarital affair with Amaresh Swain of Jagatsinghpur district as the cause of his suicide. He took the extreme step by hanging himself from a tree in his village.
