Former Tribal Leader and Minister Chaitanya Prasad Majhi Dies at 90


Former Union Minister and prominent tribal leader Chaitanya Prasad Majhi breathed his last at the age of 90 in the morning around 7 AM on Monday. Majhi died due to old age at the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Chaitanya Prasad Majhi was born in Mayurbhanj district on November 19, 1929. Majhi was a Congress leader and got elected to Rajya Sabha in 1972. He also held the Deputy Minister portfolio for Petroleum and Chemicals during his Rajya Sabha tenure till 1978. He was also a member of OPSC from 1979 to 1985.

Majhi was the State Education Minister during former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik regime and was a SC &ST Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Minister during CM Naveen Patnaik tenure.

Majhi was a member of All India Tribal Literary Forum in New Delhi from 1998 to 2000 and has written many books on tribal language and culture.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled the death of the noted tribal leader.

BJD MP Sarojini Hembram is the daughter of Majhi.
