Odisha: Hundreds of Olive Ridley Turtles, Dolphin found dead near Puri beach

Puri: In a pitiful incident, more than hundred jeopardised Olive Ridley Turtles and bottlenose dolphines on Wednesday, have found dead on the beach near Pantha Niwas in between Digabarini and Chakratirtha Road of the Puri Beach.

According to officials, the turtles came to the mouth of rivers Devi and Rushikulya of the Odisha coast for annual nesting.

Illegal trawler operation in the area would be the reason behind their death, officials suspecting. However, the actual reason is yet to be identified.

According to the reports, the carcasses of the dead turtles have been sent for the post-mortem to find out the actual reasons of death.

Elsewhere, the local government has earlier prohibited the fishing in the 20 km distance from the beach in the identified places.

In an immediate effect, the police have also arrested two illegal trawlers who were functional on the coastlines.

In a bid to claim for the safety of the turtles and sea animals, internationally acclaimed sand artist Sudarshan Pattnaik created sculptors on Puri beach with a message “Give Us Space To Live” which represents the appeal of sea animals.

He appealed the government to take actions to to evaluate the cause of death of tiny turtles and asked people to protect the sea animals through his sand art.
