Puri: World famous sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik who donned the garb of an environmental activist and staged hunger strike with his students on the beach here demanding immediate steps by the government to clean the Bankimuhan beach seems to have woken up the authorities from their deep slumber.
In a knee jerk reaction to Sudarsan’s admission to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar two days ago, exactly on the third day of his hunger strike as his condition deteriorated, the Puri municipality had initiated the clean up drive of the beach.
However, a fastidious Sudarsan immediately after his discharge from the hospital went back to the beach to re-start his hunger strike thus putting the Puri municipality authorities, the district administration and the state government in a fix.
The government has already floated tender for the setting up of a waste material treatment plant and assured Sudarsan to complete the work on a war footing note.
Sudarsan called off his strike yesterday.
