Bhubaneswar: The state government has decided to include transgenders in the birth and death registers in Odisha. While several States had already taken the steps in this regard, Odisha was to yet to implement it resulting in utter disgruntlement among the people of the thirdgenders.
State Government has taken a decision to include an option of transgender in the reporting forms of birth and deaths in the sex column. Births and deaths are registered under the provisions of Registration of Births and Deaths (RBD) Act, 1969.
Earlier provisions for transgender were not there in the Act. Only male and female columns were there in the sex column of the birth and death registers.
In a landmark judgment, on 15 April, 2014, the Supreme Court recognized transgender as the third sex. The Apex Court allowed transgenders equal right to education, healthcare and employment, and prohibited discrimination against them.
