With the 2019 Cricket World Cup about to commence on May 30 in England and Wales, questions on Rishabh Pant’s exclusion from the 15-member Indian squad was finally put to rest by the Indian skipper Virat Kohli.
Dinesh Karthik who has been picked as the No.2 choice in the Indian squad for wicket keeper MS Dhoni ahead of the young Pant was the Indian captain’s preference.
Kohli said on Karthik’s inclusion, “In pressure situations, he has shown composure. It was something that everybody on board was convinced about.”
Kohli supporting Karthik said, “He has the experience. If god forbid, something happens to MS, Karthik can be immensely valuable behind the wickets. As a finisher, he has done well.”
Kohli added that primary importance into the team selection was taken because of the World Cup.
The Indian team coach Ravi Shastri, too said on the selection issue, “We can very well imagine there’s more than an opinion in place that some capable guys have missed out. Heart goes out to them.”
Shastri added, “Picking 15 from an immensely talented pool is never easy. I would say to these guys: Keep going the way you have. Be prepared, in case there is an unforeseen requirement that pops up.”
Team India begins their World Cup campaign against South Africa in Southampton on June 5.
