Odisha Government Announces Rs 12 lakh Reward for Jayanti


Bhubaneswar: The Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik today announced a cash award of Rs 12 lakh for Divyang athlete Jayanti Behera who clinched two medals, one gold and one silver, at the recently-concluded World Para Athletics Junior Championships at Nottwil in Switzerland.

Naveen made the announcement while felicitating the golden girl of Odisha at the secretariat here today.

The 17-year-old junior athlete won a gold medal in the 400 metres event for woman and the silver medal in the 200 metres event.

She would be receiving the cash award during a felicitation ceremony to be held on August 29 on the occasion of National Sports Day.

The fifth one among six siblings, Jayanti, who hails from a poor family braved many a hurdle to rise to such heights. It was Bishnu Prasad Mishra who had first spotted her talent six years ago and since then has been nurturing her under his arms.
