BJP demands minister Nanda’s arrest for assault on Bahinipati’s relatives

Bhubaneswar: Keeping political rivalry at bay, in a rare gesture BJP candidate from Jeypore Assembly constituency Bhrugu Baxipatra on Monday condemned the recent attacks on brother and nephew of Congress leader Tara Prasad Bahinipati.

He even demanded immediate arrest of school and mass education minister Rabi Narayan Nanda for his alleged role in the attacks.

Substantiating his demand, Baxipatra stated that Bahinipati in an FIR with the local police has clearly blamed minister Nanda, who is seeking a re-election from Jeypore seat and his son for masterminding the assaults.

However, he lamented that despite the attacks on the family members of a candidate, who also is a former MLA; it is strange that no senior state Congress leader has spoken on the issue so far which is more confusing.

It can be recalled that Bahinipati, after being denied a ticket in 2009 by Congress was in BJP for a while and he even contested polls unsuccessfully. However, he soon returned to Congress and was thrown a warm reception by his old party at the state headquarters; in presence of former OPCC chief K P Singhdeo and former chief minister and Union minister Giridhar Gamang.

Bahinipati’s supporters have already gone on record saying smelling an imminent defeat in the polls; Nanda and his son have allegedly masterminded the assault on Bahinipati’s family members, which must be probed by an impartial agency.
