Jail employees begin protest, wear black badges


Bhubaneswar: Demanding a pay hike, more than 1800 jail employees of the state wore black badges during duty hours on Saturday and threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike from Tuesday.

The jail employees have been demanding equal pay at par with the staff of state police department. Under the banner All Odisha Jail Employees Association (AOJEA) earlier in a press meet in the capital on Wednesday had clarified that they would not boycott their duties.

The jail staff earlier staged an eight-day hunger strike in December 2013. They withdrew their agitation after being assured of a pay hike by chief minister Naveen Patnaik, who also heads the home department. But it has not been implemented so far, rued the members of the AOJEA.
