Bhubaneswar: Good news for all those who have been waiting with bated breath for classical status to Odia language. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rama Chandra Khuntia informed that the Union Cabinet may finally accord classical tag to Odia language soon.
Speaking about the delay, Khuntia stated that the Home Ministry and Law Ministry, which earlier had some reservations to this proposal, have finally sent their recommendations to the Cabinet Secretary to provide classical tag to Odia.
He further stated that the Linguistic Committee of the KendraSahityaAcademy on July 23 had sent a recommendation in this effect to Home and Law ministries, but the process was delayed due to certain reservations, which have finally been cleared, he added.
It can be recalled that Sanskrit was the first language to be given classical status automatically basing on its ancestry and its importance. Then four south India languages Tamil (2005), Kannada and Telugu (both in 2008) and Malayalam got the classical tag too.
