Odisha-AP dispute over Vamsadhara hearing deferred by SC

Bhubaneswar: Scheduled to be heard by the division bench of Justice Jagdish Chandra Kehar and Justice Arun Mishra on Friday, water dispute between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh over river Vamsadhara is now deferred by eight weeks.

Posted for hearing on Friday Governments of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh had submitted their replies and rejoinders in the case to the bench.

It may be noted here that Odisha government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court opposing Vamsadhara Tribunal’s interim permission to Andhra Pradesh on December 17, last year for construction of a side channel weir at Katraguda over river Vamsadhara, following which the apex court had served a notice to Andhra Pradesh government seeking a reply.

Both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha governments had drawn the attention of the division bench for fixing the date of hearing in the case on days listed for non-miscellaneous matters on a regular basis to which the bench consented and deferred the hearing by eight weeks to be listed on a day meant for hearing of non-miscellaneous matters.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Fali S Nariman has been appointed by the Odisha government as its counsel in the case.
