PDS case: Apex court overturns HC order, upholds Odisha govt’s order

Bhubaneswar: The Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned an Odisha High Court verdict and upheld the decision of the state government to bar a certain segment of people from dealing in the public distribution system (PDS) in the state, sources said.

Earlier, six years back the Odisha government vide a gazette notification ordered that no dealer can hold license of a PDS counter if he or any of his kin have a commercial interest in the business. But the High Court in an order stated that every citizen has a right to do business and the state government order must be quashed.

But the Odisha government moved Supreme Court against the HC verdict and now got a favourable decision, which is believed to be a great relief for the state government, sources added.
