Bhubaneswar: While Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) in New Delhi on Thursday, the scheme was launched in Odisha by chief minister Naveen Patnaik in the state capital in the evening. Union tribal affairs minister Jual Oram was also present on the occasion.
The scheme aims to ensure that every household has a bank account and was simultaneously launched at 60 strategic locations in the country, including Odisha. While over 1.5 crore people opened bank accounts across the country on the launching day, in Odisha, more than 62,000 bank accounts were opened on Thursday.
The event in the state capital was coordinated by the state level bankers’ committee (SLBC) and among others Odisha finance minister Pradip Amat, chief secretary G C Pati and other senior officials of the state administration and representatives of various banks attended the meeting, informed sources.
