Bhubaneswar: Following increased rainfall at both upper and lower ends of River Mahanadi and its tributaries, Hirakud dam authorities on Friday opened 20 more sluice gates of the reservoir. The total gates opened so far are 24, which is so far the maximum number during this monsoon, sources said.
On Friday, the first gate was opened in the morning around 9 am and the rest 19 were unlocked in the evening, authorities informed. Earlier, 23 gates were opened on July 24, which was the maximum till date. But later 19 gates were closed as rainfall receded, leaving only 4 gates opened.
Nearly 3.6 lakh cusecs of water are being released through the 24 gates. The water level of the dam was 623.15 feet by evening and the gates would be opened till the water level dips to 615 feet. If there is no more rain and the water level dips, then the gates would be closed phase wise, informed Hirakud dam chief engineer Biswjit Mohanty to the media.
