BJD, BJP Take Farmer Politics to Streets

Bhubaneswar (Samaya Bureau): Farming community has become a tool for power politics for all the three major political parties in the state. The ruling BJD and the BJP today went to rake up several issues, like hike in Minimum Support Price(MSP) of paddy and waiver of farm loans.

Protesting the Centre’s proposal to hike the paddy MSP by only Rs. 80 per quintal, large number of workers of the ruling BJD staged demonstration and held a protest meeting in front of the Raj Bhavan here. The leaders and party workers dubbed the Centre’s proposal was a cruel joke and only  showed its anti-farmer policy. The BJP’s promise before the 2014 general election to double the paddy MSP  was a mere ‘eyewash’, they roared. .

They demanded and pleaded that the Centre must approve  the state government’s recommendation to increase the MSP of paddy to Rs 2930 per quintal. They then submitted a memorandum a memorandum to the Governor which was addressed  to the President.

On the other hand, the BJP Krusak Morcha organized demonstrations in front of the all district Collectors’ offices today demanding complete farm loan waiver and  interest free loan to farmers.

The party questioned as to why the Odisha government is yet to take a decision on farm loan waiver when states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra along  have already announced loan waivers for famers. The BJP workers and leaders alleged that the ruling BJD instead of redressing the crises faced by the farmers only indulged in criticizing the BJP and the Centre.
