The income tax department has charged Rabri Devi and Misa Bharati with corruption under Benami Transactions Act. The department has served notices of attachments of assets to both of them. IT officials said they have taken action on the Lalu Yadav family based on multiple raids taken last month.
Benami Act violations means rigorous imprisonmentof upto seven years and comes with a hefty fine. Benami properties are those purchased in others name to conceal who really owns it.
Lalu Yadav has, however,rejected the charges and has alleged “political vendetta ” by the ruling party.
