Farmers Protest Disruption Of Water Supply From Indravati irrigation Project In Kalahandi


Kalahandi: Thousands of farmers of as many as 15 gram panchayats depending on Golamunda distributary canal of Indravati Irrigation project for supply of water took to streets and staged a demonstration today protesting disruption of water supply due to a breach caused in the canal.

Vehicular movement has been badly hampered on Dharmagarh-Golamunda-Sinapali road due to the farmers’ agitation.

A 15-ft wide breach in left canal was caused by a dislocation of a two meter-wide stone from the canal siphon leading to drastic fall in supply of water to Golamunda distributary canal as well as inundation of over 100 acre of agricultural land and deposition of sand over 5 acre of land leading to widespread crop loss.

Farmers of as many as 15 GPs including Dharamgarh, Khairapadar, Brahmanlundia, Golamunda relying on left canal of Kusumukhunti division of the irrigation project have suffered due to the disruption of water supply.
