Mumbai : National Human Rights Commission of India on Monday got a new boss in former Chief Justice of India H L Dattu.
He is the seventh Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission.
The 1950 born resident of Karnataka, Justice Dattu, had moved to Bengaluru to pursue his higher studies. He finished his LL.B. from Bengaluru and enrolled at the Karnataka Bar Council in October, 1975 as a promoter and argued in common, criminal, established and tax collection matters,.
He appeared as a Government Counsel in the Karnataka High Court for the Sales Tax Department from 1983 to 1990, Government Advocate from 1990 to 1993, Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department from 1992 to 1993 and a Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department from 1993 to 1995.
He was appointed as a Judge of the Karnataka High Court in December, 1995 and elevated as the Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court in February, 2007. In May, 2007, he went to the Kerala High Court before being elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court in December, 2008. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of India on September 28, 2014 and retired on December 2, 2015.
