New Delhi & Bhubaneswar: In a major blow to former Cabinet Minister in Naveen Pattnaik government and senior Biju Janata Dal leader Sanjay Das Verma, the Supreme Court today rejected a special leave petition (SLP) seeking annulment of a poll irregularities case against him.
Das Verma was elected to the state assembly from Brahmagiri constituency in Puri district defeating his nearest Congress rival late Lalatendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra alias Lulu in 2014 who had filed a petition two years ago in the Orissa High Court complaining about involvement of Das Burma in irregularities.
Das Verma then had moved the HC seeking quashing of the case. However in July 2015 the High Court had rejected plea of Das Vurma who was then the Food and Civil Supplies Minister, prompting the Brahmagiri MLA to move the apex court seeking annulment of the case.
Though the original petitioner Lulu has already passed away, his elder brother is contesting the case. Following the rejection of the SLP, hearings on the poll irregularities case will continue at the Orissa High Court as usual
