US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis Steps Down Amid Differences with Trump

The United States President Donald Trump recalling back his military troops from Syria on December 20 has made the Defence Secretary handing over his resignation.

Mattis in a letter to Trump, “Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours… I believe it is right for me to step down from my position”.

Jim Mattis further added, “My views and long established alliances don’t match up with the President’s view”.

A day before, Trump had tweeted, “General Jim Mattis will be retiring, with distinction at the end of February, after having served my Administration as Secretary of Defense for the past two years. During Jim’s tenure, tremendous progress has been made, especially with respect to the purchase of new fighting equipment”.

Jim Mattis resignation has not been received well by senior members in Trump’s Republican Party. The atmosphere is “distressed” after Mattis’s departure, said by Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell.

As per reports, Trump has time and again done his way instead of Mattis’s advice. The withdrawal of 2000 US troops from Syria was an utter dissent remark to the Secretary of Defense. Mattis had informed of such an activity in Syria as “strategic blunder”.
