New Delhi & Bhubaneswar: In a big blow to the Raman Singh government, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) today asked the Chhatisgarh government to put a brake on construction work of six major dams on river Mahandi.
The NGT has stayed the work in response to a petition filed by the Odisha government. All the six dams belonged to the A-category.
The Chhatisgarh government has been constructing 57 dams and barrages on river Mahanadi. The NGT had not given its nod for the construction of the six A-Category dams.
The unilateral decision by the Raman Singh government to construct the dams and barrages without consulting Odisha government has resulted in a fierce battle between the two state governments over distribution of Mahandi water.
The NGT has fixed the next hearing on August 25.
In another development, the Union Government in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court yesterday has conceded to Odisha’s demand for the setting up of a tribunal for resolving the dispute between the two states.
Odisha had strongly rejected the Negotiation Committee set up by the Centre in this regard and instead raised the matter in the Supreme Court with a proposal to set up a tribunal.
The SC will hear the case again on August 2.
