Cyclone ‘Gaja’ Turns Severe, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry on High Alert


The Cyclonic storm ‘Gaja’ centered on the Bay of Bengal advances to make impact between Cuddalore & Pamban on Thursday evening. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu.

According to Met Department, the storm ‘Gaja’ will intensify this afternoon into very severe cyclonic storm. But it will weaken before hitting the Tamil Nadu coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the seas for the next 24 hours till Friday.

The educational institutions in six districts of Tamil Nadu & in the Puducherry & Karaikal regions will remain closed on Thursday. More than 30,000 personnel have been put as back up. Khanjar & Ranvir, the two Indian naval ships are ready to aid relief to the storm affected areas.

The power lines & mobile communication could be affected. Hence they are advised to conduct ‘Cell on Wheels’ for uninterrupted connectivity in Nagapattinam & Cuddalore districts.

Around 6000 relief centers have been set up in Tamil Nadu. Ten NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams are kept on standby.
