Baripada: A vigilance court here today awarded 10 months rigorous imprisonment to former JMM MLA Bimal Lochan Das and ex-president of Urban Cooperative Bank Ltd in a corruption case.
Former vigilance court special judge Tara Parasad Rath awarded Bimal Lochan Das the sentence and also slapped a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on him.
The judge also ordered Ranjit Dhir, who took took a loan of Rs 1 lakh from the bank illegally, to undergo rigorous imprisonment for one year and pay fine of Rs 1 lakh for one case and rigorous imprisonment of one year and Rs 10,000 fine in another. The jail terms would run concurrently and in case of default, he would undergo additional jail term of two months.
The court gave its verdict in the case registered against the former JMM MLA Bimal Lochan Das, Ranjit Dhir and two other officers of the Urban Co-operative Bank, Baripada for sanctioning and disbursing Rs 1,00,000 illegally to Ranjit Dhir on the basis of fabricated documents and inadequate security.
However, Ranjit Dhir did not repay the amount.
On completion of the investigation, the four were named in a charge sheet and faced trial in the vigilance court.
