Policemen guarding a residential area were attacked by unidentified militants this afternoon in Shopian district of south Kashmir. The militants entered the guard room of the Jammu and Kashmir police guard post and attacked four policemen.
3 policemen died on the spot. The fourth policemen was critically injured and died while being treated in the hospital. In the incident, the militants ran away with the police rifles. Now, the area has been guarded by the policemen.
It is speculated that the attack came under the heels of three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists being killed in an encounter at Mujgund area on December 9.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly criticized the attack on his twitter handle, “I strongly condemn the attack on the police post in Shopian & condole the deaths of three @JmuKmrPolice personnel in the line of duty. I pray for their souls and their speedy recovery of those injured in the attack”.
