Former Supreme Court justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose was sworn in as the country’s first Lokpal ombudsman on Saturday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan administered by the President Ram Nath Kovind.
On March 22, a high level committee presided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan and senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi unanimously chose Justice Ghose’s name. The Lokpal body was constituted on Saturday, five years after the Lokpal act received President’s approval on January 1, 2014.
The 66-year old former Supreme Court justice retired as judge from the apex court in May 2017. He was continuing as the member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The judicial and non judicial members of the Lokpal body were also announced. As per rules, the Lokpal body at the Centre will constitute one chairperson and 8 Lokpal panel members including 4 judicial members.
The judicial members of the anti-corruption body include – Justice Dilip B Bhosale, Justice Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, Justice Abhilasha Kumari and Chief justice of Chhattisgarh HC Ajay Kumar Tripathi.
Lokpal’s non-judicial members are: Archana Ramasundaram (Sashatra Seema Bal Chief), Dinesh Kumar Jain (former Chief Secretary Maharashtra), ex-IRS officer Mahendra Singh and former IAS officer Indrajeet Prasad Gautam (Gujarat).
