Agriculture Department Clerk Arrested For Cheating Farmers Of Rs 3 Crore In Gajapati


Paralakhemundi: A special squad of Paralakhemundi police of Ganjam district today arrested a clerk of the Agriculture Department namely Somanath Mohanty for allegedly siphoning off farm equipment purchase money worth about Rs 3 crore from beneficiary farmers of Gajapati district.

The accused clerk Somanath Mohanty was arrested from Khurda this morning after the special squad raided his hideout on the tip-off about his presence.

The arrested clerk Somnath Mohanty had allegedly cheated at least 45 farmers from Goshani, Kashinagar and Paralakhemundi areas in Gajapati district over the last one year on the allurement of providing them with various farming equipment under subsidized schemes. He lured the farmers to purchase farming equipment like tractors and paddy cutters through a local finance company on promise of pretext of substantial subsidy amounts and then swindled away with their money.

Notably, some cheated beneficiaries also had held a protest at Paralakhemundi a few days ago after learning that the clerk Somnath Mohanty had duped them and since then the accused was absconding.
