Three students of Ravenshaw University drowned and one is still missing in Jobra barrage, linked to River Mahanadi on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Sahanwaz Khan, Devi Prasad and Pyarimohan Pradhan. The student who is yet to be traced is Priti Ranjan Das. The students belong to Information Science and Telecommunication (IST) and Information Technology and Management (ITM) departments of the University.
The bizarre incident took place when five students went to Jobra barrage to take bath at around 3.30 pm.
One of them slipped into the deep water. Others were also trapped in the current of water while trying to rescue their friend, the rescued student said.
While local fisherman rescued one of them, fire brigade personnel and ODRAF team fished out three bodies.
As the news spread, hundreds of varsity students rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, University VC, registrar, Cuttack DCP and collector have reached the spot to take stock of the situation.
All bodies have been sent to SCB medical college and hospital, vice chancellor of Raveshaw University, Prakash Sarangi said.
